Olivia Wilde’s online comments of when she compared coming out to trying her hand at filmmaking have resurfaced, with some criticizing her for invalidating the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.
Olivia Wilde Comes Under Fire For Past LGBTQ+ Comments
The actress, who made her directorial feature debut with 2019 teen comedy Booksmart, was slammed on Twitter for comparing her own career journey to coming out.
"I almost feel like someone who’s come out of the closet,” she said about the experience in a 2019 episode of the TV series Off Camera With Sam Jones.
Another comment that came under fire involved Wilde, who has never disclosed her sexual orientation, saying she would have loved to have “a lesbian relationship” following her first divorce from Tao Ruspoli.
Wilde said that she once considered “a soft kind of lesbian relationship, just gentle kissing and scissoring” when she was lonely after the end of her first marriage before she met Jason Sudeikis.
"People are saying Olivia Wilde is homophobic, but if they did even a semblance of research they would realize that she’s never once been anything but an advocate for the #LGBTQ community," one user tweeted.
Wilde Has Prompted A Debate On What's Really Anti-LGBTQ+
The comments prompted a debate on social media about what can be considered homophobic or anti-LGBTQ+.
“I have always respected Olivia Wilde but when it comes down to this it’s terrible,” one Twitter user wrote.
Some fans of Wilde think that this attempt at cancelling her is connected to her relationship with Harry Styles. Some in Styles’ fanbase reserved a similar treatment to singer Lizzo over her friendship with the One Direction member.
“harries are so weird to olivia wilde for NO REASON… y’all do it with every girl harry is seen with it’s so odd please get a life,” someone tweeted.
“Y’all had me thinking that Olivia Wilde was spewing slurs or something. This is literally the last thing that our community should be worrying about. Just.. ya know, educate her,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“I can’t believe I have to say this, but do NOT use this experience as an excuse for homophobia or anything hateful. Don’t be gross,” they added.
Others, however, deny the connection between Wilde facing backlash and her personal life.
“no one is cancelling olivia wilde because shes 'dating' harry so lets stop those comments before they even start, shes being 'cancelled" because shes invalidating the lgbtq+ community, NEXT,” was another comment.
